Mayor of the County of Galway Cllr. Liam Carroll, Elected Members, members of The
Aughrim Remembered Committee, the Kelly Clan and distinguished guests. I am delighted
to be here tonight on the occasion of the launch of the first Aughrim Military History
Summer School.
This is my second time coming to an Aughrim Remembered Event in my capacity as
Mayor of Ballinasloe; the last time was to a 3 day conference and now to this first ever
Summer School.
I think that you have a wonderful mix of leading military history experts giving lecturers at
the Summer School not only dealing with the Battle of Aughrim but our broader military
history in the county. I am sure that you will have a very rich and rewarding weekend
hearing about Colonel Charles O’Kelly, the battle of Aughrim, the battle of Knockdoe,
Count Lally, the Man who lost India, the Galway Poet’s Jacobite Epic and in broader terms
the impact of the 1690-1691 war on Connacht and the midlands.I am delighted to see that Sunday is dedicated to the genealogical side of the Battle with
lectures about some of the people involved in Aughrim. It is wonderful to see that Julie
Cruise, Manager of the Interpretative Centre will be speaking about an ancestor who parttook in the battle. The genealogical service on Sunday afternoon presents a great
opportunity for all to find out more about their past and the wonderful people who went
before them.
I would like to thank The Aughrim Remembered Committee, Aughrim Active Retirement
Group, St. Catherine’s Hall Committee who have worked so hard in developing this military
history summer school. I wish you a very successful weekend and hope that I will be back
again for the launch of another Summer School.

here tonight on the occasion of the launch of the first Aughrim Military History Summer
School.
This battle- Cath Eachroma fought between the Jacobites and the forces of William 3rd
was the decisive battle of the Williamite War in Ireland. Both armies were about 20,000
men strong. It was one of the more bloody recorded fought on Irish soil with over 7,000
people were killed. It meant the effective end of Jacobitism in Ireland, although the city of
Limerick held out until the autumn of 1691.
The battle became known in the Irish language tradition as Eachdhroim an áir - "Aughrim
of the slaughter".
It is very fitting that this summer school is being launched tonight as today is the 322nd
anniversary of the Battle of Aughrim and that the Summer School is dedicated to Colonel
Charles O’Kelly. It is fitting that the Summer School should be called after a man who
wrote the book “Macarie Excidium” or The Destruction of Cyprus. It was a secret history of
the war of the revolution in Ireland. This is the only book written from an Irish point of view
on the battle and the situation in Ireland at the time. This little know soldier, although in his
70th year took to the field on that faithful day. His brother John was his Lt. Col. And his son
Denis was a Captain in Galmoy’s cavalry regiment.
I would like to pay tribute to Aughrim Remembered Committee in particular Captain Joe
Kelly, Dr. Padraig Lenihan, NUIG, Valerie Seale, John Burke, Jo Scanlan, Mary
McLoughlin, Paddy Naughton, Julie Cruise, Manager, Battle of Aughrim Interpretative
Centre, Helen Mannion, Aughrim Active Retirement Group, St. Catherine’s Hall
Committee, Marion Kelly and the catering committee who have given so much time and
work in hosting this summer school.
It is also great to see so many local people getting in involved in the programming and
delivery of this weekend event. I hope you have a very memorable and enjoyable 3 days
and I would hope that this important heritage and community Summer School would go
from strength to strength.
